Traced origins to Isaac C Johnson, 1811-1911, who in c1851 withdrew as manager of J B White & Sons, cement manufacturers, and set up a business at Rochester in partnership with George Burge, trading as Burge, Johnson & Co. Emerged as a pioneering manufacture of cement, holding important patents. In 1854 this business was dissolved when Johnson established his own business at Cliff, Kent, near to the Thames estuary. 1856 expanded business by acquiring cement works at Gateshead, where he became a leading civic figure, followed by another at Greenhithe, Kent, in 1870s which he developed into a major works. By 1899 incorporated as I C Johnson & Co Ltd. Also made products from cement such as chimney pieces, vases, figurines, etc. 1900 merged into the newly formed Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers Ltd but subsequently withdrew. 1923 merged into British Portland Cement Manufacturers Ltd
