Notes:

Traced origins to 1852 when established by Alfred E Burrell, d1884, as sellers of ships' stores, especially paints.1861 established a paint factory at Southwark which in 1863 moved to Mile End. Did a large export trade. 1861 described as white lead, zinc paint and colour manufacturers, oil and tar merchants, oil boilers and refiners. From 1870 known as A E Burrell & Son and from 1877 as Burrell & Co. 1888 acquired Burrell's Wharf, Millwall, and built major plant. Incorporated 1912. 1914-18 started to manufacture pigment colours especially for dyestuffs. 1920 acquired colourmaker J W & T A Smith Ltd of London followed by a similar business, Linfoot & Cooper, in 1936. 1943 gave up paint production to focus on colour manufacture. 1947 converted to a public company
