Traced origins to Benjamin Fayle, b1751, as an operator of ball clay mines at Norden and Norton, Dorset, by 1803. He had been in business in the City of London from the 1780s, latterly working, inter alia, as a clay merchant. 1806 built a notable three mile tramway from Norden to Poole Harbour to convey his clay to the coast for shipment . Subsequently extended and later converted to steam. On Fayle's death, business carried forward by his family, especially his daughter, Charlotte, was was a leading business. Sometime William Babington important when traded as Fayle & Babington before reverting to Fayle & Co. 1949 merged with Pike Bros of Creech to form Pike Bros, Fayle & Co Ltd, based at Wareham, which in 1968 was acquired by English China Clays Ltd
