Traced origins to 1940 when Thorium Ltd, led by Dr Patrick Grove, on behalf of British government, started to refine radium at Amersham for wartime use as luminous paint. Subsequently undertook management of a radiochemical plant for the government in order to develop radioactive materials for wider use including in medicine. From 1950s manufacture of isotopes became of major importance. 1954 the radiochemical plant included within the newly formed United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority until 1971 when stood alone as Radiochemical Centre Ltd to focus on isotopes. Grove retired 1979. Renamed Amersham International Ltd in 1981 and privatised in 1982. 1997 merged with Nycomed of Norway to form Nycomed Amersham Plc. As Amersham Plc acquired by General Electric of USA
