Traced origins to c1860s when established by William Burman and a Mr Phipps to make horse clippers, later sheep clippers. In c1880s diversified into garden tool making. Sometime made shears and horse clippers, later motor vehicle components such as gear boxes. By 1920s had diversified further into making gear boxes for motorcycles and, later, in to motor vehicle components, notably steering gear. By 1960s employing 1,500 in a major motor vehicle components manufacturing business Latterly known as Burman Hi Ton following merger with Hi Ton Engineering Ltd and closed 2006
