Traced origins to 1784 when established by James Fitch, 1762-1818, as a cheesemaking business in the City of London. Grew rapidly in 19th century as a meat and dairy distribution and processing business and by 1870s had a nationwide presence. 1908 incorporated as Fitch & Son Ltd. In 20th century diversified further developing, inter alia, important baking (Hales Trent Cakes Ltd) and meat retailing interests. Acquired Keevil & Keevil, an important meat distribution business at Smithfield. 1958 merged with Lovell & Christmas Ltd to form Fitch Lovell Ltd [2023]
