Traced origins to 1819 when William Butcher, c1791-1870, with his brother Samuel, d1869, set up in business as manufacturers of edge and other hand tools. 1822 involved in steel making. Developed an important trade with USA. By mid century a leading Sheffield maker of cutlery and edge tools. Late 1860s developed steel casting works at Philadelphia. On the deaths of the brothers works sold and business closed
