Traced origins to 1789 when John Dewhurst started cotton spinning at Elslack and soon after developed further mills at Embsay, Malham and Airton. From 1829 developed a major mill at Skipton - Belle Vue Mill - which became the centre of the business's activities. In particular from 1869 made sewing thread. Incorporated in 1888 and in 1897 merged with other leading businesses to form English Sewing Cotton Co Ltd but for many years retained its identity
