Erskine family of minor landowners, especially under Sir John Erskine, 1672-1739, had lead mining interests at Leadhills and silver mining interests at Alva where they developed Scotland's richest silver mine at the time of the Jacobite Rebellion. Sometime leased to London Lead Co. 1760s Alva Mine revived as a cobalt mine but was shortlived
