John Curr, 1756-1823, was engineer and mineral agent at Sheffield of the Dukes of Norfolk and managed their collieries there from mid 1770s. Innovative engineer who originated flanged cast iron rails for use in colliery tramways and improved steam pumping engine leading to productivity increases. Worked for other coal mine owners as well as Norfolks. Invested in foundries and ropeworks. Dismissed by Norfolk in 1801
