Established 1531 to oversee the well being of navigable watercourses and watercourses flowing directly to sea. 1605 powers amended to include all watercourses and ditches with a two mile radius of City of London. Powers subsequently extended. When required they could force landowners to maintain and repair. 1855 responsibilities acquired by Metropolitan Board of Works. Sometimes referred to as London Commissioners of Sewers
