(Sir) Marc Isambard Brunel, 1769-1849, was a mechanical and civil engineer. From his arrival in UK in 1799 he designed machinery for blockmaking (at Portsmouth Naval Dockyard, 1802-05), woodworking including veneer cutting, printing, textile manufacture, etc. 1821 imprisoned for debt following failure of his business enterprises. 1820s turned to civil engineering, designing docks, bridges, etc. Most notable for the design of Rotherhithe - Wapping tunnel, built 1825-43, in which a tunnelling shield, which he designed, was first used. His son was Isambard Kingdom Brunel, 1806-59
