Isambard Kingdom Brunel, 1806-59, was a civil engineer and son of Sir Marc Isambard Brunel. Initially worked with his father before working on Bristol Suspension Bridge and Bristol Docks. Appointed engineer to the Great Western Railway in 1833 and was responsible for the building of many of its lines. Subsequently designed and oversaw the build of the Great Western, Great Britain and Great Eastern steamships. Involved in many other civil engineering projects at home and abroad. Reckoned the greatest engineer of his age
