Traced origins to the iron and tool business to James Fussell who in 1744 established an iron works at Mells and used its output in order to make edge tools. Developed substantially by the following generation of which one son, John, broke away to establish his own works at Nunney. By early 19th century the family had six works. Subsequently in decline and in 1882 the family businesses - James Fussell, Sons & Co, John Fussell & Co and Isaac Fussell & Co - which then made spades, shovels, edge tools such as scythes, reaping hooks, etc, were merged into James, Isaac & John Fussell Ltd. Closed c1900 although the firm's brand names were acquired by others and used for several years
