Traces origins to 1896 when established as an auctioneer of live and dead stock at Ruskington, Sleaford, by William H Brown, 1869-1935. Reorganised 1933 into two independent businesses - William H Brown & Sons, auctioneers, valuers and land and estate agents, and F W Brown & Co, hay, corn, straw and fertiliser merchants. 1930s relocated to Sleaford. Soon diversified into property and were also corn, hay and straw merchants. From c1918 known as William H Brown & Sons when also referred to as estate agents and insurance brokers. Opened branches from 1947, often through acquisitions, and by late 1970s had developed as a leading national business; by 1982 had 44 branches and 66 by the mid 1980s. Continues as part of Sequence
