In 1772 the Commissioners of Richmond Bridge, in effect a grouping of private investors, acquired an Act of Parliament to permit construction of a road bridge across the Thames at Richmond. Subsequently bought up local ferry rights. Designed by James Paine and Kenton Couse. Bridge completed in 1777 and toll income generated until 1859 when it became toll free on death of last investor. Acquired in 1931 by Surrey and Middlesex County Councils.
