Traced origins to Samuel Brown, 1776-1852, a naval officer and later civil engineer, who in c1811 established chain making workshops in London which he moved to Millwall, Poplar, in 1812. 1818 established a second plant at Newbridge [Pontypridd]. Early on known as Samuel Brown & Co and from 1823 as Brown Lenox & Co. Made chain cable for ship use and was a pioneer in this. Brown patented means of making chains for securing ship anchors and became major supplier to Royal Navy. Also from c1817 made chains for pioneering suspension bridges and was an early designer and promoter of these. In 19th century the firm also made anchors, buoys, colliery winding gear, various castings and mouldings, etc. 1968 became part of F H Lloyd Group when chain making relocated to Midlands. Latterly made ore and waste processing equipment. Closed 2000
