Laid out 1904 by Rushendon (sic) Estate Co Ltd, formed by Edward Woodriff Jaffray and James E Castle. One of the first planned industrial estates in Britain. Developed infrastructure including Queenborough Wharf by Queenborough Wharf Co Ltd. By 1905 Leopold Farmer & Sons, London, were marketing the site. Settle Speakman & Co Ltd acquired much of water transport and other assets in 1920s. Latter closed in 1960s. Attracted much manufacturing industry including glass production, chemicals, etc
