Traced origins to 1894 when established by Joseph W Brough at Newcastle as 'The Wholesale Cash Store', which merged elements of wholesaling with retailing to create competitive prices in what was a new concept. By 1897 also collecting orders via 'travellers' By 1900 known as Brough & Sons. Sold basic provisions, especially to mining communities in north east in bulk using delivery service and travellers. Subsequently opened branches and had 13 by 1914. Incorporated 1917. 1918 acquired by Meadow Dairy Co Ltd of London when had c20 branches. Retained identity and expanded rapidly in north east. By early 1950s had 61 branches. Subsequently part of Allied Suppliers Group [2024]
