Traced origins to 1840s when John Aird, 1800-76, started a pipelaying business in London. Soon known as John Aird & Sons when joined by his sons (Sir) John and Charles. An early prestige contract was in connection with Great Exhibition buildings. Came to specialise in waterworks as well as gasworks, building in UK and across Europe. Emerged as the major UK international civil engineering contractors by late 19th century when involved in wide range of projects. In decline after 1914 but remains in being although not as contractors
