Marshall family had their business origins in textile production and trading at Nantwich in the 17th century. At end of 17th century diversified into salt production and in early 18th century abandoned textiles. In c1720 Thomas Marshall established himself at Northwich and by 1734 was operating on his own account. By 1760 most important salt shipper from Northwich. His son, also Thomas, 1735-97, greatly expanded business and developed substantial works at Witton. Between 1798 and 1831 John & Thomas Marshall was UK's largest salt production and trading business. Subsequently in decline. c1888 business merged into Salt Union Ltd on its formation
