Established by John Pluckrose, 1870-1956, in 1897 as R F Johnston & Co. Initially he had worked as London agent for the New York firm, John Underwood & Co, manufacturers of ink ribbons, etc, for typewriters and later typewriters themselves. 1897 broke away to establish in City of London his own business making inking products for typewriters, duplicating machines, etc. Early on used Crusader trade mark and in 1912 renamed Crusader Manufacturing Co. By 1912 manufacture of carbon paper was major activity and remained so until 1960s. 1908 relocated main operations to Walthamstow. Incorporated 1939. Post 1945 bought up failing competitors. !970s successfully diversified into production of ribbons for computer print. 1995 sold by Pluckrose family to KMP of Germany
