Established 1907 by Hugh F Locke-King, 1848-1926, when he built on his landed estate, centred on Brooklands House, a motor racing circuit, over three miles long and in parts banked. It operated in conjunction with Brooklands Automobile Racing Club, formed in 1906. It was the world's first motor racing circuit, and as such a spectator attraction, as well as being a leading location for motor vehicle testing. An aerodrome was constructed in its centre in 1909, several flying schools opened and numerous aircraft manufacturing businesses set up factories there. Sometime owned by Brooklands Estate Co Ltd and in 1936, when still controlled by Locke-King family, consecutively by Byfleet Estates Ltd and Brooklands (Weybridge) Ltd. Racing circuit closed 1939
