Traced origins to 1840 when Joseph Brooke, d1876, started to quarry York stone. Subsequently known as Joseph Brooke & Sons. 1898 first to manufacture concrete flagstones and established Non Slip Stone Co for purpose. 1900 Brookes' Ltd formed to incorporate Brooke & Sons and Non Slip Stone Co. Undertook explosives manufacture 1914-18 and subsequently established Brookes' Chemical Ltd. Sometime acquired North Wales Granite Co Ltd, Channel Islands Granite Co Ltd and Tarbitumac Ltd. Also made glazed bricks. By 1930s one of largest producers of roadway and building materials in world. Closed c1969
