Traced origins to 1886 when established as Waterside Mill Co by A Mr G Uttley and a Mr Alsop, cotton manufacturers. 1903 acquired by A M Buxton and E A Coulborne and in c1919 began manufacture of sheetings and cloths for industrial purposes including heavy motor tyre canvas. Renamed in 1920 Waterside Mill Co (Bury) Ltd. Thereafter expanded rapidly. Converted to a public company in 1947. 1950s continued to make tyre cord, canvas, etc
