Traced origins to Joshua Barber who in 1868 established a business of cotton waste merchants at Bolton which developed into Joshua Barber & Co Ltd. Developed into a leading cotton spinning and weaving business with mills in Lancashire and Yorkshire. Grew by acquisition of established businesses which continued under their own names and management, including Coloured Cotton Spinning Co Ltd, Mirfield; Cannon Brothers, Bolton; Croal Spinning Co Ltd, Bolton in 1955; W A Openshaw & Co Ltd, Bolton in 1916; Samuel Renshaw & Sons Ltd, Bury in 1948; Talbot Spinning & Weaving Co Ltd, Chorley. Reorganised in 1942 as Barber Textile Corp Ltd, a public company. By 1950s focused on producing wide variety of yarns and fabrics. 1970s acquired by Spirella Group
