Patrick Stead, b1788, was a leading East Anglian grain merchant and, especially, maltster. Shipped his grain and malt nationwide but especially to London where a major customer was the brewer, Truman, Hanbury & Buxton. Based initially at Great Yarmouth, by the mid 1820s he had developed malting interests across Suffolk and Norfolk but especially at Great Yarmouth, Halesworth and Beecles. Later he was focused on Halesworth. Connected with various improvements in water transport especially at Halesworth and Southwold Harbour. In partnership with fellow Scots as Stead & MacKenzie until c1817 and afterwards until 1832 with John J Robinson as Stead & Robinson. By mid 1840s had withdrawn from corn trade and in 1849 sold his malting business to Trumans for £18,000
