Traced origins to John Broadbent who in c1868 established himself as a food retailer at Southport. By 1880 had developed a wholesale warehouse and moved his retail business away from food to drapery, hosiery, outfitting, upholstery, millinery, etc. By late 1880s had emerged as a leading Southport department store using Bon Marche label. 1887 sold business to C S Broadbent (no relative) who incorporated it in 1896 as Broadbent Bon Marche Ltd and sold shares to his customers. 1898 acquired Stoke Newington, London, Bon Marche but soon disposed of it at great loss. Expansion resumed 1908. Later known as Broadbents of Southport Ltd. 1972 acquired Boothroys (Southport) Ltd, high class drapers to form Broadbents & Boothroyds which sometime was acquired by Beales department store group
