Traced origins to James Gillingham, 1838-1924, son of a footwear maker at Chard who joined his family's business when young. By 1860s designing and making hip and spinal supports and in 1867 described as a designer and manufacturer of 'artificial limbs and surgical mechanical appliances'. By 1880s referrals made to him by doctors nationwide. 1874 opened first branch, at Exeter, and later others in South West. In 1890s joined by his son, Sidney, to become Gillingham & Son. By 1910 had handled 15,000 cases. 1950 business sold to Ellison & Paramore of Sheffield
