Notes:

Traced origins to Richard Edgington, sack maker at Abingdon in 18th century. Subsequently opened in London and in 1823 described as sacking and tarpaulin makers, supplying brewing industry in particular. From 1849 developed as a leading manufacturer of tents supplying royal family, army, mining camps, etc. From mid 19th century developed a close association with S W Silver & Co of Greenwich, later Silvertown, inter alia travel equipment makers who specialised in weather proofing especially waterproof clothing [also had substantial insulated cable manufacturing interests]. 1899 the two merged as S W Silver & Co & Benjamin Edgington Ltd. From 1920s sack business served coal industry. Also hired tents, etc. 1967 merged with Thomas Black of Greenock to form Black & Edgington Ltd. Blacks were established in 1863 to make ship sails and later focused on tents for leisure camping
