Notes:

Established in 1838 by John Smith, 1813-75, as an iron and brass foundry and associated engineering works at Chard. By 1860 trading as Phoenix Iron Foundry. By 1866 formal partnership name was J Smith & Sons changing to J Smith & Co by 1877. By 1870s making grass cutting and hay shaking machines, gas holders and their frames, cranes, grabs, etc. By 1880s in decline and closed 1889 when premises acquired by what was to become Phoenix Engineering Co Ltd
