Traced origins to 1914 when, under wartime conditions, Garrard & Co of London, royal goldsmiths, started to manufacture precision range finders for artillery pieces. 1915 established Garrard Engineering & Manufacturing Co Ltd to undertake the work, initially based at Willesden, north London. Post war the business started to manufacture small lathes and boring tools and in 1919 relocated to Swindon. Public company 1926 with Garrard family retaining control. By 1930s specialising in manufacture of motors for gramophones when a major employer at Swindon. Garrard London connection ended c1945. 1931 established an electric clockmaking subsidiary. 1960 acquired by The Plessey Co Ltd and in 1979 sold on to Gradiente Electronica of Brazil from when gradually run down
