Originally part of Royal Mint. Reviewed in 1848 by Royal Commission following which it was separated from the Royal Mint. Leased in 1852 by N M Rothschild & Sons, the Royal Mint continuing as a customer and carrying on business under the brand name Royal Mint Refinery. Refined gold to form gold bars. This activity complemented other Rothschild activities of gold dealing and, later, acting for South African gold mining businesses. In decline from the 1920s. 1939 established branch at Tring on account of the war. Post 1945 diversified into the refining and processing of other non ferrous metals. In 1960s disposed of the business, mostly to Engelhard Industries Ltd in 1967. Tring operation closed 1971
