Traced origins to the United Concessions Co formed in 1889 by Cecil Rhodes. Granted a royal charter later in 1889 when known as British South Africa Co which aimed to administer, develop and exploit the northern part of southern Africa, ie territories that came to be known as Rhodesia and Nyasaland and later Zimbabwe and Zambia. Generated revenue through sales/leases of land, mining rights, etc, and out of revenue paid administration expenses. Developed and operated until 1947 the Rhodesian railway system.1923 self governing colonial status granted to territories and company became a solely commercial concern with huge mineral rights, land holdings, railway infrastructure, etc, as well as very substantial profits. Only paid dividends after 1923. 1933 sold certain mineral rights to Southern Rhodesia government and in 1964 other rights to Zambian government. 1965 merged with Central Mining & Investment Corp Ltd and Consolidated Mines Selection Co Ltd to form Chartered Consolidated Ltd.
