Notes:

Henry Bell, 1767-1830, was a Scottish engineer best know by far for his pioneering work in designing and assembling the 'Comet' paddle steamer, the first ship to be successfully propelled by steam (although John Thomson claimed he was originator). Set up in business at Glasgow as a wright and builder in 1790 and built 'Comet' in 1812. Unsuccessfully tried to operate coastal steam shipping out of Glasgow. Also a building contractor, participating in the expansion of Glasgow and built and managed Bath's Hotel at Helensburgh.
