Notes:

British Railways Board was established in 1963 on abolition of the British Transport Commission which had managed Britain's railways through its Railway Executive since nationalisation in 1947. Traded as British Railways and, from 1965 until 1997, as British Rail. Its early operating structure was: Eastern Region, London Midland Region, Western Region, Southern Region and Scottish Region. In the early 1980s Brtitish Rail was reorganised into five independent and profit accountable business sectors - Intercity; Provincial; Freight; London & South East; and Parcels. At the same time peripheral interests were privatised - British Transport Hotel's assets in 1983, shipping services [Sealink] in 1984, real estate, etc. From 1994 railway infrastructure passed to Railtrack Plc and from 1996 train operating business privatised. It eventually became manager of minor residual assets which passed to Strategic Rail Authority in 2000. Defunct 2001 although continued to exist [2023]
