Formed in 1881 by royal charter to acquire concessions on territories in North Borneo granted from the 1860s by the Sultans of Brunei and Sulu. Developed trade in wide range of commodities including gutta percha, timber, tobacco, rubber, etc. Established infrastructure to make this possible, eg railways, roads, harbour and a state bank. 1946, with the business in difficulties, the British government assumed control of its territories and administered them as a colony
