Established in 1920 by producers, manufacturers and users of non ferrous metals to undertake research in non ferrous metallurgy. For several years research carried on at National Physical Laboratories, Research Dept, Woolwich and universities. 1930 centralised administrative functions at Euston, London. By 1939 had 300 members. 1937-39 opened new laboratories at Euston. Post war work came to involve research into nuclear fission
