Traces origins to British Linen Co established in 1746 by royal charter to acquire Edinburgh Linen Co and was a linen manufacturing and trading business. From 1760s gradually assumed the functions of banking, capitalising on its network of agents. Emerged as a leading Scottish bank with an extensive branch network. 1837 acquired Paisley Banking Co. 1906 renamed British Linen Bank. 1919 acquired by Barclays Bank Ltd and 1969/71 merged with Bank of Scotland. Name revived for use as BoS's merchant banking business in 1977 [2023]
