Traces origins to 1899 when established by Albert Curtis Brown, an American journalist, as a literary agency and as a press agency (the latter subsequently being given up). Came to represent many leading UK authors, especially those selling in the USA. Opened New York office in 1914 followed by others. A C Curtis was succeeded by his son, Spencer Curtis Brown. He sold the business to an investment company in 1968 but it was subsequently bought by its management
