Traced origins to British Iron Co, established in c1824 by John Taylor, 1779-1863, engineer, and others to acquire or build ironworks and associated coal and iron ore mines. Planned to operate on a hugely ambitious scale. 1825 acquired sites near Pontypool, South Wales, near Ruabon, North Wales and near Corngreaves, Dudley. 1843 reconstructed as New British Iron Co. Thereafter operated successfully on a smaller scale divesting less profitable sites at, inter alia, Plas Issa, Abersychan and Netherton. 1883 acquired limited liability. Closed 1880s when assets sold and goodwill acquired by Noah Hingley & Sons.
