Established in 1945 as British Insulated Callender's Cables Ltd through merger of 1] Callender's Bitumen Telegraph & Waterproof Co Ltd of Erith, originally refiners of bitumen and from 1890s makers of insulated cables, and 2] British Insulated Cables Co Ltd. The latter company had been formed at Prescot in 1890 as British Insulated Wire Co Ltd and in 1902 merged with The Telegraph Manufacturing Co Ltd to form British Insulated & Helsby Cables Ltd which in 1925 was shortened to British Insulated Cables Ltd. The British Insulated Callender's Cables name was shorted to BICC Ltd in 1975 and then changed to BICC Plc in 1982 As well as cable manufacture had important interests in cable related activities such as power supply, telephone systems, railway electrification, etc. Acquired, inter alia, Telegraph Construction & Maintenance Co Ltd and, in 1969, the construction business Balfour Beatty Ltd. Subsequently sold cable businesses and renamed Balfour Beatty
