Newman family were merchants at Dartmouth from at least the 16th century when they imported wine and exported fish. By 17th century John Newman was sending fishing vessels to Newfoundland and from 1672 Richard Newman had a trading station there. By 1679 sending port wine to Newfoundland to mature. From 17th century linked to Hunt Roope & Co of Dartmouth. Developed extensive fishing and wine interests embracing Newfoundland as well as several trading posts there. 1907 fishing interests ended.
