Traced origins to Samuel Baker, d1836, house carpenter and builder, whose sons Samuel, d1829, and George, d1862, continued in the business which became known as Samuel Baker & Sons in 1822. Samuel Baker, the elder, became well known to the leading architect, Sir Robert Smirke, and the two worked together on prestigious projects such as British Museum, Customs House, Houses of Parliament, etc. Sometime based on Strand, London. Following the death of Samuel father and son, business was carried on by George and subsequently by George W Baker and George Dashwood, a nephew. 1873 won contract to build the Natural History Museum which caused the firm's bankruptcy in 1880
