Traced origins to 1902 when promoted by business people connected with the cotton goods production industry to encourage the growing of raw cotton in the British Empire in order to reduce dependence on supplies from USA. Incorporated by Royal Charter, 1904. Provided expertise, etc, without charge, drawing funding from the Committee's members but also receiving some government funding until 1915. Also diversified into other areas such as acting as selling agent for growers. Many of its activities assumed from 1917 by Empire Cotton Growing Committee (later Empire Cotton Growing Corp / Cotton Research Corp). By 1927 largely a trade representation organisation. Still operating 1950s
