Established in 1935 by Courtaulds Ltd, a leader in cellulose technology through their rayon textile business, as a joint venture with Comptoir des Textiles Artificiels (CTA) of France, owners of the cellophane patent from 1913, and its UK subsidiary, The Cellophane Co Ltd, established in 1927. Established large manufacturing plant at Bridgwater and, later, at Barrow in Furness. Developed rapidly from 1945 as a packaging material, first in sheets, later in bags and rolls and in some instances printed. Established a subsidiary, Colodense Ltd, at Bedminster, Bristol, to produced specialist printed and coloured bags for loose food packaging. In decline by 1990s when acquired by UCB Films
