Established in 1889 by Baron Julius de Reuter as Imperial Bank of Persia. Operated under a concession granted by Shah of Persia and a royal charter granted in UK. Established branches throughout Persia. Renamed 1935 Imperial Bank of Iran, British Bank of Iran & the Middle East in 1949 and British Bank of the Middle East in 1952. Opened branches in other Middle East countries from 1940s and withdrew from Iran in 1952. 1959 acquired by Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corp but continued to trade separately [2023]
