Traced origins to 1740s when surveying of Highlands of Scotland was undertaken for military reasons. 1790s Board of Ordnance, which supplied the Army and Royal Navy with, inter alia, equipment and services, started a systematic survey of Britain for strategic reasons, commencing with southern England. First map published 1801. At this time, led by William Roy. Thereafter mapped entire country and on larger scales. 1835 Ordnance Geological Survey (later British Geological Survey) established as part of the Ordnance Survey. 1855 transferred to the War Office. Sometime transferred from London to Southampton. In recent years converted into an executive agency of British government. Outsourced printing and warehousing from 2010. Continues in 2013
