Traced origins in business to Thomas Philips, 1728-1811, Manchester merchants with interests in J & N Philips, the largest tape manufacturers in Europe with mills in Staffordshire and Lancashire, and in other businesses including hatting. These interests were inherited and developed by his son (Sir) George Philips, 1766-1847, and also included Boddington, Philips & Sharp, West India merchants.
