Traces origins to 1856 when established as Leek & Moorlands Permanent Building Society. Grew also by acquisition from 1938 when acquired Longton Mutual Permanent Benefit Building Society. Other acquisitions included NALGO Building Society in 1960 when amongst UK's top 10 societies. 1965 merged with Westbourne Park Building Society to become Leek & Westbourne Building Society. 1975 renamed Britannia Building Society. 2005 acquired the demutualised Bristol & West Building Society to make it the second largest UK society. 2009 merged with Co-operative Banking Group and use of name substantially reduced by 2018
